Why We Hand-Braid Every Necklace Cord (And What It Does for Your Pendant)
Most people look at one of our stone pendants and see the stone first — a barrel of natural banded agate, an eye pattern formed over millions of years. Fair enough. But here is the maker's truth: we spend almost as much time on the cord as we do selecting the stone. A pendant lives or dies by its cord — and that is why every necklace in our hand-braided cord line is braided by hand, in-studio, one stone at a time. (Our designer originals are a different story — some use metal findings by design; every product page states exactly how that piece is made.)
The Material: Premium Taiwanese Knotting Cord
The cord we use is a finely braided Taiwanese knotting cord — the same family of cord used in traditional Chinese knot work. It is a remarkable material: soft and smooth against the skin, yet strong enough to carry a heavy stone pendant day after day without fraying or stretching.
That said, knotting cord is not our only material — a small number of our pieces use a premium waxed cord, also hand-braided, chosen for the crisp, sculpted look it gives certain designs. We pick the cord to fit the piece. But for most stone pendants, knotting cord wins: softer against the neck than waxed cord, kinder to sensitive skin than any chain, and strong enough to carry real weight every day.
Hand-Braided vs Machine-Braided
A machine-braided cord looks perfect for about a week. Then it starts to relax, torque, and kink.
When you braid by hand, you control the tension strand by strand. The braid stays dense and round along its whole length, and it keeps that shape for years. There is also a warmth to a hand braid — a slight, organic irregularity — that we have never been able to get any other way.
More practically: braiding it ourselves means we control the thickness, the stiffness, and the way the cord drapes. A heavy agate barrel puts real weight on a braid. The cord has to carry it gracefully — no stretching, no kinking, comfortable against the neck all day.
Braided Around One Specific Stone
No two natural agate stones are alike, so we braid each cord to match its stone — not the other way around.
The details are our favorite part. Small accent beads are threaded onto the braid — often red/black agate,or Star and Moon Bodhi beads — chosen to answer the colors inside the stone's banding. Sometimes, Tiny metal spacer rings flank the pendant: just enough to frame the eye pattern without competing with it.
No Clasp, No Metal: The Adjustable Sliding Closure
Instead of a clasp, our hand-braided necklaces close with an adjustable sliding design. Pull the ends to set any length, from choker to long pendant. The whole necklace stays metal-free — just cord, stone, and a few small beads. Customers with sensitive skin write to thank us for this more often than you would think.

Cords Carry Meaning Too
In the Himalayan and Chinese traditions that inspire our work, cords and knots have carried meaning for centuries — tied with intention, given as tokens of protection and connection. If you are curious about the symbolism side, we wrote a full piece on what a red string means across cultures.
We do not claim anything mystical for our necklaces. But we do tie every braid with intention in the simpler sense: slowly, carefully, by hand, for one specific stone and one future wearer.
Caring for Your Cord
Keep it dry when you can, wipe it with a soft cloth, and keep it away from perfume and household cleaners. For the full daily routine, see our guide: How to Care for Your Silk Agate & Tibetan Dzi.
FAQ
Are all your necklaces hand-braided?
No — and we'd rather be plain about it. The cords on our natural stone pendant necklaces are hand-braided in-studio around each specific stone — most in Taiwanese knotting cord, a few in premium waxed cord. Our Red Cord Blessings bracelets use carefully sourced premium ready-made cord. And our designer original pieces are built differently by design — some use metal findings and components. Every product page states exactly how that piece is made.
Will the cord stretch out or fray?
Knotting cord is chosen exactly because it resists both. A well-tensioned hand braid keeps its shape for years of daily wear. Like any textile, it ages — but slowly, and gracefully.
Is the cord okay for sensitive skin?
Yes — our hand-braided cord necklaces are fully metal-free: cord, stone, and small beads only. No clasp, no chain, no nickel. (For designer pieces that do use metal findings, check the product page for the exact materials.)
How do I change the length?
Pull the two sliding ends to set any length from choker to long pendant. Photos of each step are in our cord adjustment guide.
